Here is some advice for students about to take the TOEIC test. It is just some of the many important tips given at OnlineEnglish.EU TOEIC Test Preparation website; www.onlineenglish.eu.

It is interesting that most students do not reach the score level they need for two main reasons.....

The first reason is that their level of English knowledge and ability is simply not high enough for the score they need to achieve. Many of these students take part in TOEIC preparation courses, but they fail to realize that their English ability is not good enough; also that "preparation for a test" is not learning English.

Through preparation a student can increase the TOEIC score level they achieve by becoming accustomed to the TOEIC test, by planning a strategy for the test sitting, and by improving their accuracy and speed when answering questions. Indeed, preparation can allow a student to score 20% - 50% more in the TOEIC test, but this depends on each individual student.

The second reason is that students take far too long answering the first question types in the reading part of the test. Normally a student will be motivated and dedicated to answering the questions correctly; they will scrutinize the initial "incomplete sentence and text completion questions" before committing themselves to an answer; even though they may know the answer immediately. BUT what they do not realize is this....

In the reading part of the test a student must answer 100 questions in 75 minutes. This actually means that on average, a student has only 45 seconds per question!! The problem comes towards the end of the reading part; "single and double passage questions", because a student will find they may need a lot of time to read the associated texts.

So you may ask yourself how is it possible to not run out of time. The answer is simple; in the initial incomplete sentence and text completion questions, try to answer each question in under 45 seconds. You will then save “spare time” and when you come to the longer reading questions, you will have enough time to answer them all. Naturally this is where planning a good test strategy helps!

Why should I prepare for the TOEIC test?

I must admit that it's high time to put my courage to the TOEIC test which stands for Test of English for International Communication. In fact, I have kind of a ticket which allows me to take the test for free. The benefit will expire at the end of August.
I haven't taken the test for over three years, so I'm a bit unsettled. They say that the test requires some specific methods especially when you aim to make a good record. I don't know much about it, and in fact I'm not willing to study English for passing exams. I'd like to study "active English" rather than "bookish English." Having said that, I'm happy with a good score. Oh, my, I have mixed feelings...

HI, I understand your mixed feelings totally. But remember, studying English (what you have called bookish English) and active English are just two parts of a very big picture. Even native English speakers have to study English to become native English speakers, and, even after they become native English speakers, they have to do some passive study to become better native English speakers, therefore there is nothing better on your way to becoming a fluent speaker than to study both actively and passively.

Do not confuse “active/passive” study of English with “preparation for a test”. These two things are different. In fact, no matter what test you are sitting, whether for car mechanics or English language, preparation is very important so that you understand the test itself and know what to do and how to do it. (this is called strategy).

Planning a good strategy will allow you to concentrate fully on the skill being tested and not have a part of your brain concentrating on “how should I do this? How should I answer this question? Am I spending too long answering one question? Will I be able to finish in time? Now what should I do now? What do they mean? …. etc” during the test sitting.

Preparation for a test is to allow you to perform better and get a higher score through good planning and understanding of the demands of the test, not improve the skill being tested.

Forget the comments about secrets and tricks. These are just marketing words used by publishers to get students to purchase their TOEIC material. Actually these claims are very unprofessional and turning the TOEIC test (a professional language proficiency test) into a game to be beaten in the eyes of students, a little like the secret command IDKFA for the game Doom. The fact is that there are no secrets or tricks, just some common sense things to think about and to use to plan a strategy.

The TOEIC test does not try to fool students, rather present to the students during the test sitting, certain English situations where mistakes can be and are made; even by native English speakers.

Hello. I would like to prepare for the TOEIC Test

The TOEIC test is a test for the measurement of a person’s English proficiency in the workplace. It is operated by ets.org of America and etsglobal.org in Europe. The test is internationally recognized and is demanded more and more in employment situations.

OK so that is basically the test, but this article is really about preparation and the problems of selecting good preparation. As the marketplace realizes that there could be money to earn, so advertising takes over from common sense. Additionally there are situations of blogs offering relatively general and sometimes bad advice and many personal opinions regarding preparation for the TOEIC test that in the majority should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Actually these comments could be very detrimental to a student, that may then be guided down the road of incorrect information and thus, affect their test result more negatively than being unprepared in the first place!

Destroying a Myth.
Let me destroy the myth!
Learning English and TOEIC preparation are NOT the same thing!

Naturally in preparing for the TOEIC test a student will be exposed to English and in doing so there will be an element of English proficiency improvement, but in reality much more is needed. So let’s look at what TOEIC preparation really is and how it can help a student sitting the TOEIC test:

What is Preparation?
Like any test, no matter the form or the skill being tested, there will always be elements of not being accustomed, not understanding the requirements, not understanding the procedures and therefore, not being able to plan. These elements will always affect a test taker negatively resulting in split concentration. Split concentration means less brain-power to concentrate on the test questions and answers and therefore in many cases a lower score than could otherwise be achieved. Also, a student can easily run out of time because they spent too much time on initial questions.

Correct preparation for the TOEIC test therefore means; to advise a student competently of procedures and to let them practice test questions. (Meaning questions expertly configured to offer the required focus on the core skills tested by the TOEIC test)
Additionally preparation will include tips and advice (sometimes called tricks) to assist a student when completing the test. Furthermore the student will have the opportunity to complete „mock“ tests to further build confidence, again with questions expertly created to offer benefit and not forgetting time, a student will have the chance to plan timing for each question, a very important part of any test and the one point in the TOEIC test that causes the most problems.
